Dr Julian Mayes — climatologist and renal transplant patient — recently spoke at a St George’s Hospital Grand Round, an educational and networking forum that brings together multidisciplinary teams from across the Trust and its partners. These sessions give staff and patients the chance to learn from specialists across a wide range of fields.

The Grand Round, titled “Staying Safe in a Changing Climate”, featured contributions from experts in weather, emergency preparedness, and occupational health. Dr Mayes provided a clear and accessible overview of how climate and weather patterns are evolving, with particular emphasis on South‑East England. He outlined recent trends in temperature, rainfall, and extreme weather events, helping attendees understand the local implications of a warming climate.

Although his talk was not specifically renal‑focused, Dr Mayes’ perspective as a transplant patient added meaningful context. Many of the themes he discussed — especially the increasing frequency of hot spells — are highly relevant to people living with kidney disease and the clinical teams who support them.
